Tribute to Surjit Bindrakhia

Surjit Bindrakhia was born on 15 may 1961 to a famous village wrestler S.Sucha singh , and mother Gurcharan Kaur. His father always wanted him to be a wrestler but destiny chooses another way for him. He tied a knot with Preet Kamal and blessed with two kids Gitaz and Minaz. He started his Career by singing Boliyan for his college bhangra team. His career reached at the top when Shamsher Sandhu, a famous lyricist, and Atul Sharma, a famous music director recogonized his talent. They worked as team and they are still remembered as a most successful team in Punjabi Music Industry. They made many records which are still unbeatable. Surjit Bindrakhia is one of the most powerful voices among Bhangra singers. He is also famous as a DJ King. He was a versatile singer with wide range of sounds.

                      His first album came to the market in 1991, it was Munde AAkhde Pataka.He is the very first international superstar in Bhangra music. At last he ruled the world with his song “Duppata tera sat rang da”. It was third album. It holds a record for being at number one place on UK Charts. It remains at the same place for many weeks. It is one of the popular songs of Bindrakhia’s career. One cannot hold himself of dancing on the traditional beats of this song. This song is remixed number of time. It holds a record of being popular for 4 decades that are- 1980, 1990, 2000 and 2010. We cannot deny the fact that his voice is still the one of the most powerful voice among traditional singers of Punjab. Surjit Bindrakhia is a man with 32 solo audio cassettes during his career.

               Biggest milestone of his career was the song Duppatta tera satt rang da, which help him to achieve the position that he deserved. After that there was never looking back situation. The songs like Tera yaar bolda is a genuine proof of his greatest voice in the history of Bhangra. His songs were much awaited at the occasion of New year ewe. He is one of the singers who loved to sing at Dhol beats, most of his songs were on the Dhol beats. Even most of the singers of his time advanced towards the western beats but he being a son of the soil preferred Dhol beats. In addition to it, Surjit Bindrakhia is still remembered for his high tone and heik. He used to sing on one note continuously in a breath. He served as link between traditional Punjabi folk music and modern Punjabi Pop. His famous songs are- Munda ki mangda, Mukhda dekh k, Billian akhaan, Jatt di pasand, Jogiya, Lukk tunoo tunoo. He died in his sleep on November17, 2003. It was an untimely demise. He was suffering from health problem for almost a year and was said to have died of a heart attack. Ju7st one day before his death, his song “main kal tak nahi rehna” premiered on TV. It was a last song that he recorded.
